Behind the app
Pool Buddy – the beginner-friendly pool care app
Pool Buddy started from a simple observation: for beginners with a small above-ground pool, there was no honest app. The available options either required expensive sensor hardware, forced you to create an account, or buried the basic features behind ads and paywalls. This page explains who's behind Pool Buddy, how it came about and what we stick to.

The human behind it

Pool Buddy is a separate project – a PWA that grew out of the observation, in summer 2026, that no honest pool care app exists for beginners.
Why Pool Buddy exists
What triggered Pool Buddy
A 2026 market review of pool-care apps showed a consistent picture: for beginners with a simple above-ground pool, there was no serious option. What was on offer: paid apps that still showed ads, account-gated freemium models, or sensor apps requiring €200–500 of Bluetooth hardware. For the occasional pool owner who checks a test strip once a week and just wants to know how much chlorine granulate to dose, no honest option remained. Pool Buddy closes that gap.
How the dosing recommendations are derived: The calculation models are based on publicly documented pool-chemistry standards and the dosing values of common chlorine and pH regulation products. The calculation logic was compiled with AI assistance from technical literature and manufacturer data sheets, then implemented in the app. The app provides reference values – for special cases (salt-water systems, natural pools, commercial use), consultation with a pool-supply specialist remains essential.
What we stick to
Four principles that aren't up for negotiation
Core version stays free
The core features – chlorine and pH calculation, reading history, reminders – stay free forever, with no ads and no account. Planned premium features (e.g. multi-pool management, extended analytics) will be offered on top. The base app will never disappear behind a paywall. If you want to support voluntarily: Ko-fi.
No data collection
No account, no cloud sync, no advertising or cross-site tracking networks. Your readings stay on your device. Period. The public information pages use a cookie-free, anonymous visitor count (Umami). Details in the privacy policy.
Works offline
WiFi at the pool is often bad or off. Pool Buddy runs fully without internet – load it once, use it anywhere.
Only what's needed
No voice assistants, no AI pool advisor, no 47 menu items. The app nails three things: remind you to test, calculate the dose, tell you when it's safe to swim.
Timeline
How Pool Buddy grew
Pool Buddy kick-off
Market review of pool-care apps reveals a clear gap for beginners. First PWA prototype – chlorine and pH calculation, pool-volume assistant, runs offline right in the browser.
Website expansion and guides
In-depth guide pages for the most common pool problems (cloudy water, green pool, pH, chlorine too high) plus an app comparison. FAQ and About pages added.
Google Play Store launch
Pool Buddy also ships as a Trusted Web Activity (TWA) on the Google Play Store. Goal: better discoverability for users who look for apps in the store rather than in a browser.
Premium features
Optional extras like multi-pool management, extended analytics and export of the reading history – as a paid add-on. The core version stays fully free.
