Cloudy pool water? Get clear water in 24 hours

Milky, cloudy pool water almost always has one of five causes. This guide shows you how to identify the right one and get crystal-clear water back — usually within 24 hours, without calling a pool pro.
What does cloudy pool water mean?
Cloudy pool water is a loss of visibility where the pool floor is no longer clearly visible. The cause is microscopic suspended particles — usually precipitated calcium, dead algae, or fine debris — that scatter light and give the water a milky or grayish haze. Cloudy water is not an emergency, but it's a clear warning sign: almost always, pH, chlorine level, or filtration are off. In nine out of ten cases, you can restore clarity by correcting water values, shock chlorinating, and running the filter for 24 hours. Only if the pool remains cloudy after this treatment does the problem usually lie with the filter equipment itself.

The 5 most common causes
First, test pH and free chlorine with a test strip or drop test. Based on those values, the table below usually reveals the cause at a glance.

Test your water
Measure pH and free chlorine. Target: pH 7.0–7.4 and free chlorine 1–3 mg/l. If any value is clearly off, you've usually found the cause. Log the values — Pool Buddy stores them with a timestamp automatically.

Correct pH first
Get pH into the target range before anything else — chlorine won't work efficiently otherwise. pH above 7.6: add pH minus. Below 7.0: add pH plus. Dose according to product label or use the app's dosing calculator to avoid overshooting.

Shock chlorinate
Add 10–20 g chlorine granulate per cubic meter of pool water in the evening with pool lights off (sunlight breaks chlorine down faster than it can work). Keep circulation running. Do not use the pool for 8 hours.

Run filter for 24 hours
Run the filter pump without pause. Backwash sand filters when pressure rises above the green zone. For very fine particles (pollen, limescale dust), add a flocculant — it binds particles into larger clumps the filter can then trap.

Recheck the next day
If visibility reaches the pool floor again and free chlorine is below 3 mg/l, the pool is safe to swim in. If not: inspect the filter (sand age, backwash cycle, cartridge condition) and replace media if needed.
Prevention
Keep your water permanently clear
- Test twice a week: pH and free chlorine. Above 28 °C (82 °F) water temperature or after rain/parties, test daily.
- Run filter at least 8 hours a day – rule of thumb: turn over the pool volume at least twice per day.
- Check alkalinity monthly (target: 80–120 mg/l) – it buffers the pH and prevents swings after chlorine dosing.
- Replace filter sand every 3–5 years, cartridges annually. Old sand clumps and loses filtering power.
- Cover the pool before rain when possible – rain dilutes chlorine and carries fine dust into the water.
