Pool chlorine too high: safely lower it

A chlorine level that is too high irritates skin, eyes and airways – and damages your pool equipment. This guide shows you when chlorine is "too high", which three methods safely bring it back down, and when it is safe to swim again.
When is pool chlorine "too high"?
For private pools, the target range for free chlorine is 1 to 3 mg/l. Values above 3 mg/l are elevated, above 5 mg/l clearly too high, and no one should enter the water above 5 mg/l. Public pools under stricter regulations (like DIN 19643) target 0.3–0.6 mg/l, but that assumes continuous automated dosing – for a residential pool without such a system, the higher 1–3 mg/l range is standard and practical. Too much chlorine usually comes from over-dosed shock treatment, a faulty doser or an incorrectly configured salt-chlorine generator. Note that the classic strong "chlorine smell" is not a sign of too much chlorine at all, but of combined chlorine – a byproduct of chlorine plus body oils, sunscreen and urine. Free chlorine itself is almost odourless. A well-maintained pool smells neutral. With an actually high chlorine level, most swimmers react with burning eyes, red skin and dry mucous membranes. Rule of thumb: measure before every swim, never assume.
All values and recommendations are guidance for private residential pools based on generally accepted industry standards. Commercial installations (hotels, clubs, public pools) are subject to stricter regulations such as Germany's DIN 19643.
Why it matters
Risks of elevated chlorine
⚠️ Do not swim when free chlorine is above 3 mg/l. Children and people with sensitive skin or asthma may already react from 1.5 mg/l.

Lowering chlorine – options compared
Let the sun do it
UV light naturally breaks down free chlorine. Remove the pool cover, run the filter, add no new chlorine. Safest and gentlest method – costs only time.
Partial dilution
Drain 20–30% of the water and refill with fresh tap water. Halves the chlorine level quickly, but also washes out other values (pH, stabiliser) – rebalance everything afterwards.
Sodium thiosulfate
Chemical chlorine neutraliser. Works instantly but is hard to dose – over-dosing wipes out the entire chlorine reserve and forces a fresh shock cycle. Emergency use only.
💡 Recommendation: When time isn't critical, always use method 1 (sunlight). When guests arrive tomorrow, method 2. Method 3 only after a severely over-dosed shock.
Sodium thiosulfate dosing rule of thumb
About 5 g of sodium thiosulfate per m³ of water reduces roughly 1 mg/l of free chlorine. Worked example: 20 m³ pool at 5 mg/l chlorine, target 2 mg/l → 3 mg/l × 20 m³ × 5 g = 300 g of sodium thiosulfate. Never add this amount at once. Split into 3 portions (100 g each), run the filter for 30 minutes between doses and retest. If you hit the target after the second portion, skip the rest.
Watch out: sodium thiosulfate also slightly lowers pH – after neutralising, retest pH and correct if needed.
Application
Step by step to a safe chlorine level

Stop swimming, remove the chlorine source
Get everyone out immediately. Pull tablets from the skimmer, switch off the doser, turn off the salt cell. Without this step the over-dose keeps happening.

Measure free and combined chlorine
Use a DPD kit – test strips are inaccurate at high values. Total chlorine minus free chlorine = combined chlorine. If combined is above 0.2 mg/l, a proper shock is needed before you start lowering.

Pick the right method
No time pressure? Sunlight (method 1). Need it fast? Dilute (method 2). Extreme excess and swimming needed today? Sodium thiosulfate (method 3), dose strictly per label.

Remeasure and stabilise
Retest after each step. Only when free chlorine sits at 1–3 mg/l and pH is 7.0–7.4 is it safe to swim again. Then reset the doser to fix the root cause.
