Pool pH level: target range, lower, raise

The pH value is the single most important reading in your pool – it determines whether your chlorine works, whether calcium falls out of solution, and whether the water irritates skin. This guide covers the target range, correct dosing of pH-minus and pH-plus, and why alkalinity is the actual key to a stable value.
What is pH and why does it matter so much?
The pH value measures how acidic or basic water is on a scale from 0 to 14. Values below 7 are acidic, above 7 basic, exactly 7 is neutral. For pool water the optimal range is 7.0 to 7.4 – within this window chlorine works at about 70 percent efficiency and the water is skin-friendly. If pH climbs above 7.6, chlorine loses up to 80 percent of its disinfecting power, calcium falls out of solution, and the water turns cloudy. If pH drops below 6.8, water becomes aggressive, attacks metal parts and the pool liner, and can cause skin and eye irritation for swimmers. pH fluctuates day to day due to rain, chlorine dosing, water temperature and evaporation – which is why measuring twice a week is mandatory. Keeping pH stable inside the target range saves chlorine, prevents algae growth and protects your pool equipment.
All values and recommendations are guidance for private residential pools based on generally accepted industry standards. Commercial installations (hotels, clubs, public pools) are subject to stricter regulations such as Germany's DIN 19643.

Why does pH swing?
Common causes of pH swings

Acronyms decoded: TCCA = trichloroisocyanuric acid, the active ingredient in slow-dissolving chlorine tablets (also just "trichlor"). Stabilized and acidic. Dichlor (sodium dichloroisocyanurate) is the fast-dissolving granule version with a similar effect. Both release cyanuric acid on top of chlorine, which accumulates in the water over time – if you use only these forms, cyanuric acid climbs over weeks and eventually needs a partial water change to bring back down.

Correcting pH – step by step

Measure pH and alkalinity
Test both values in parallel. If alkalinity is under 80 mg/l, raise that first (with alkalinity-plus) – otherwise pH will bounce back after each correction.

Calculate the dose
Rule of thumb: 100 g pH-minus per 10 m³ of pool water lowers pH by about 0.2. 100 g pH-plus per 10 m³ raises it by about 0.2. For exact values, use the Pool Buddy calculator or the label instructions.

Pre-dissolve before adding
Always pre-dissolve granulate in a bucket of water, never pour straight into the pool – the liner will bleach at the impact spot. Pour slowly in front of the return jet with the filter running.

Wait 2 hours and remeasure
Run the filter for at least 2 hours so the product distributes evenly. Then remeasure and, if needed, top up with a half dose – over-dosing is the classic beginner mistake.
The key to stability
Why alkalinity matters more than pH itself
Alkalinity is the water's ability to buffer pH changes. Think of it as a shock absorber for pH.
💡 Rule of thumb: If you have to correct pH every week, you probably have an alkalinity problem, not a pH problem. Target alkalinity: 80–120 mg/l. Test alkalinity monthly and adjust with alkalinity-plus (sodium bicarbonate).
